Egg Whites are my friend

Egg Whites are becoming a new favorite of mine. They hold 40 different proteins and contain no cholesterol or fat. There are only 32 calories in 2 Egg Whites! They are very bland on their own, but when added to salad or mixed with something else with flavoring, they pick up that flavor easily.

Pump...Me Up

Yesterday (April Fool's!) I had a power sandwich:

  • Whole wheat wrap

  • 12-hour cooked Turkey

  • Steamed baby spinach

  • Swiss Cheese

  • Lettuce

I was trying a out a new place that just opened--they did a good job handling the flow of customers since it was packed with people wanting to try something new. They also had a phone on the way up to the register with which patrons could call in a drink order for one of their healthy smoothies while waiting on line. I can't deny a smoothie, so I tried the Strawberry-Banana, made with skim milk, ice, Only 8, and fresh fruits. It was a little bland but decent for being so health conscious.

Today, I am enjoying a salad from one of those "make-your-own" places that have sprung up EVERYWHERE. I am not usually a salad person, but these are great! Today's salad contains:

  • Baby Spinach (fresh, uncooked)

  • Smoked Turkey

  • Egg Whites

  • Portobello Mushrooms

  • Feta Cheese

  • Sesame Noodles (for a nice crunch!)

  • Cucumbers

  • Low fat/low cal Caesar dressing

Amazingly delicious, and all of the ingredients are fresh and work well together! :)

Muy Delicioso

Today's lunch was packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins...and it was quite yummy. It was:
  • 6 pieces of salmon sushi
  • 1 hard boiled egg (but I popped out the yolk and just ate the egg whites)
  • About 1 cup+ of strawberries

Salmon is packed with Vitamin D, which is exactly what I need to keep me happy throughout this strange winter/spring that we're having in NYC. It also has Omega-3 Fatty Acids that are essential to well being - they have been seen to prevent blod clots, improve cholesterol ratio, improve overall heart health and lower triclycerides. Salmon can also protect you again stroke, heart attacks, colorectal cancer and macular degeneration. Awesome!

Strawberries are an incredible source of Vitamin C, which I don't think many people realize. Oranges are usually known for their C content, but strawberries have almost as much Vitamin C. They are also good for your eyes, and they counteract the effects of free radicals. They also have a lot of other vitamins and acids that are not in oranges, all in one pretty, pink package.

Welcome!

Hello!

A little about me: After dealing with a few health problems that don't seem to be treatable by medicine, I have realized that food is the best possible way to guide my body back to optimum health. This blog is mostly an online diary for me, to catalogue what I eat on my way to health and fitness.

Hopefully, I can learn something and give others some ideas, too.
